The right to follow one's religion and support for animal rights are going head to head in Belgium.

If ones religion brings harm, pain or distress to other sentient beings, then that religion itself is wrong in it's teachings

As of September 1st the region of Wallonia has joined the region of Flanders in effectively banning halal and kosher slaughter, a decision that has serious implications for butchers.

"From that moment we will have to close our business. We cannot sell meat that is not halal," one butcher told Euronews.

Animal Welfare group GAIA insists the ban is not targeting certain religious communities.

"It is absolutely not a ban on religious slaughter. Not at all. It is a ban on slaughter without stunning...Even if you follow the rules of the 'art' meaning you use a very sharp blade, and then you do everything according to the religious tradition, even then the animal will suffer," says Michel Vandenbosch, President of GAIA.

EU laws on animal welfare require stunning - but allow religious exceptions. Kosher and halal slaughter forbid stunning.

Some believe the animal welfare argument has been hijacked by politicians to push anti-migrant agendas, Mustapha Chairi - President of CCIB, The Collective Against Islamophobia, said "This regulation is in agenda of Islamophobia in Europe...and now they have a lot of problems with Judes (sic Jewish) organisations. This is why we have to go to justice with the Jude[sic] organisations."

While the Jewish and Muslim communities seek to fight the ban in Wallonia, Belgium's constitutional court has already sent a case to the EU's top court for the Flemish region's ban.

A ruling is expected within two years and would set a precedent for the rest of Europe

The European Court of Justice backed a Belgian ban on Muslim halal and Jewish kosher animal slaughter today, sparking anger among religious groups.

It ruled in favour of a regulation already imposed in the Flemish region of Belgium which, on animal rights grounds, bans the slaughter of livestock that have not been stunned.

The measure was seen as effectively outlawing the Muslim and Jewish traditions, which require livestock to be conscious when their throats are slit.

The ruling said: 'The court concludes that the measures contained in the decree allow a fair balance to be struck between the importance attached to animal welfare and the freedom of Jewish and Muslim believers to manifest their religion.'

An umbrella organisation for Jewish groups in Belgium slammed the decision as a 'denial of democracy' that did not respect the rights of minority groups.

'The fight continues, and we will not admit defeat until we have exhausted all our legal remedies, which is not yet the case,' Yohan Benizri, head of the Belgian Federation of Jewish Organisations, said.

Rabbi Menachem Margolin, chairman of the European Jewish Association, said the ruling represented a 'sad day for European Jewry'.

'What a terrible message to send to European Jewry, that you and your practices are not welcome here. This is a basic denial of our rights as European citizens,' he said in a statement.

Belgium's Flanders regional government issued the order in 2017 which took effect in 2019 that abattoirs must stun livestock before slaughtering them.

Animal rights activists had pushed for the ban, arguing that stunning animals so that they are unconcious when they are killed is more humane.

The argument was made by the authorities in Belgium that the measure would 'reduce their suffering' but it was widely perceived as being targeted at the Muslim halal tradition.

Traditionally, halal meat is slaughtered by hand when a knife is used to cut the front of the animal's throat and is blessed by a slaughterman.

For food to be halal it must be alive before it is killed and blood must be drained from its body.

Judaism limits the foods its followers can consume, one restriction being the way in which meat is slaughtered.

A specially trained person, known as a Schochet should perform the procedure and the animal is killed with a knife inn a single unbroken move across the throat.
