Flame of Hope
By Chiya Muksi
You are the burning flame of hope
To those broken souls,
Denied of existence
Stripped of their pride and dignity
Victims of constant assimilation
Tortures and executions
The fear of being who you are
One''s very birth right
Banned from the mother tongue
Separated from the roots
And from one''s very own identity.
To those who yearn for freedom
Children of the fire worshipers
Saladin and Ehmede Xani
Legendary Barzani
You are the burning flame of hope
Burning in one corner of Kurdistan
Source of courage, dignity and pride
Stomped by the cruel rulers
Homes turned into rubble
Bombed, gassed, ripped apart.
Resisted to countless attempts of genocide
Cultural and Physical
You are the flame of hope
Burning in one corner of Kurdistan
The land that was ripped apart
By the borders of our cruel rulers,
Filled with land mines,
Electric fences and watch towers
Each took a brutal turn
To extinguish the flames of hope
As it tried to become alive.
You are the long lasting flame
That will spread throughout our land
Beyond the imposed borders of our cruel rulers
To bring dignity and pride to our nation
To be able to say
I am a Kurd again.
