Earthquake in Elezîz

Elazığ hit by 6 magnitude earthquake

Villages of Elazığ's Karakoçan township, particularly, Okçular, Yukarıkanatlı and Kayalı were hit by a 6 magnitude of earthquake early on Monday morning. 51 citizens lost their lives and about 100 others were wounded, 9 of them are reportedly in serious condition.

Boğaziçi University's Kandilli Observatory says the epicenter of the tremor is Başyurt village and it took place exactly at 04:32 Turkish time.(02:32 UTC)

Nearby townships and villages were also affected by the tremor. Some buildings collapsed and many others are reported to be damaged.

Search and rescue teams, ambulances and medical teams have been trying to help people in the region, since the earthquake took place in the morning.

Soon as the news of the earthquake broke out, State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Çiçek, Health Minister Recep Akdağ, Minister of Public Works and Settlement Cevdet Yılmaz have set out for the affected region.

Following the big shock, 31 aftersocks between 2,6 and 4,1 magnitudes have been recorded in the region.

Fırat University rector Prof. Fevzi Bingöl warned citizens to be cautious about further aftershocks.

one minute ago i saw the news in kurdistan tv. i hope our people are save now and i am very sorry for every Kurd who lost life or get injured - march is not good months for us...
i wish i could go there and help my people.

That's so horrible! I hate earthquakes! Also think that Los Angeles will have a big earthquake this year.

I´m reading, Tunceli, Bingol and Diyarbakir felt the earthquake too.... In Elazig there are not school classes until all get calm again, cause they afraid for another earthquakes. Scientific say that maybe will continue some earthquakes. I hope if there are more, they would be smaller... :( .

Yea, the earthquake was even felt in neighboring provinces of Tunceli, Bingöl and Diyarbakır...
I hope there aren't anymore major aftershocks either.
