Elazığ hit by 6 magnitude earthquake
Villages of Elazığ's Karakoçan township, particularly, Okçular, Yukarıkanatlı and Kayalı were hit by a 6 magnitude of earthquake early on Monday morning. 51 citizens lost their lives and about 100 others were wounded, 9 of them are reportedly in serious condition.
Boğaziçi University's Kandilli Observatory says the epicenter of the tremor is Başyurt village and it took place exactly at 04:32 Turkish time.(02:32 UTC)
Nearby townships and villages were also affected by the tremor. Some buildings collapsed and many others are reported to be damaged.
Search and rescue teams, ambulances and medical teams have been trying to help people in the region, since the earthquake took place in the morning.
Soon as the news of the earthquake broke out, State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Çiçek, Health Minister Recep Akdağ, Minister of Public Works and Settlement Cevdet Yılmaz have set out for the affected region.
Following the big shock, 31 aftersocks between 2,6 and 4,1 magnitudes have been recorded in the region.
Fırat University rector Prof. Fevzi Bingöl warned citizens to be cautious about further aftershocks.
